Located 2068 miles apart the City of Fife Washington and the City of Pontiac Illinois have a few things in common Fife and Pontiac both have rich histories in agriculture Both have around 10000 residents They are communities made up by wonderful people who care about the environment Most exciting of all both are celebrating the New Year by dedicating prescription pill drug disposal boxes on January 7 2009
Fife City Councilmember Glenn Hull encouraged his fellow council members back in June to bring Paul Ritter a high school teacher from Pontiac IL out to Washington The presentation brought local and state decision makers to the Fife Performing Arts Center to discuss the prescription pill drug disposal problem facing our nation
The Prescription Pill and Drug Disposal Program P2D2 started out as a collaborative effort between local stakeholders and students from Pontiac Township High School located in Illinois It has now grown into a model for towns and cities throughout the world to do their small part and help clean up the environment from unwanted or unused pharmaceuticals.
Since the inception of the P2D2 Program the system has collected thousands of pounds of medication that otherwise would have been disposed of improperly Because of Washington State and Federal Regulations. The City has acquired a secure collection container that will be located outside of the Fife Police Department to collect unwanted medication from citizens throughout the Puget Sound
On January 7 2009 The City of Fife was honored to become the first of many cities on the West Coast to become part of the network that is the P2D2 Program. If you would like information on how to join the network of towns and cities around the world that have chosen the P2132 model you can contact Councilmember Glenn Hull at 253- 527-3618
